JUNESMUN 2009, 28.02-1.03.2009, University of Zurich

The JUNESMUN 2009 took place at the University of Zurich. Again there were four committees. This year we  also provided Background Guides for the participants in order to facilitate the preparation.

While there were 54 participants last year, we had around 100 students this year!! They were from Basel, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, St. Gallen, and Zurich.

The Keynote Speakers were Valentin Zellweger - Deputy Director, Directorate of Public International Law, Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs - and the official UN Youth Reps of Switzerland.

We simulated the following Committees and Topics:

  • Security Council: Piracy and maritime security
  • General Assembly (1st committee): The Outer Space Treaty and Ballistic Missile Defense
  • UNHRC: Violence against women and human trafficking
  • WHO: Prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa

JUNESMUN 2008, 1.-2.03.2008, University of Berne

UNYA Switzerland oganized its first own event in March 2008. The idea was to give young students and participants of international MUNs the chance to familiarize with the Rules of Procedure and the Voting Procedure. In order to organize this event, all JUNES members were invited to enroll. MUN Bern organized the facilities and the Geneva International MUN (GIMUN) provided the Chairs and Coaches.

54 persons participated at the first JUNESMUN, which was assessed to be a great success and a good preparation for the participating delegates.

During this weekend four committees were simulated with the following topics:

  • General Assembly (2nd Committee): The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in Development
  • Security Council: Arms Embargo against Somalia
  • Human Rights Council: The Rights of Migrants and Refugees
  • African Union: Kenya - Stability after the Elections

As this event proved to be a success, there will be for sure a follow-up in 2009.
